An Inside Look at an Up and Coming Stop Motion Artist
If you’ve been a follower of Life Lapse for a little while, you’ve probably caught on to how much we love artists and professionals that use stop motion! From large brands to small businesses, to independent stop motion users and professional stop motion makers: we love it all, in all its forms. There’s just something so special about how stop motion makes us feel.
One of our favorite types of creators is stop motion artists: people who make all stop motion, all the time. One of our newest stop motion artist discoveries is @victoria.sferruzza. Keep on reading below to find out about her stop motion abilities and how she got here. Victoria is an avid user of our app, Life Lapse. She’s definitely an up-and-coming stop motion artist, so keep an eye out for all the great things she’ll do!
Meet Victoria!
Victoria is based in Charleston, South Carolina. She was first introduced to stop motion about a year ago when her best childhood friend showed her good friend — the amazing Colette Peri’s Instagram page. Victoria was immediately fascinated by her work. She studied the videos to try to comprehend how to create this magic and soon wanted to try it for herself!
Tell us about your work
About 2 months after first being introduced to stop motion I ordered some lighting and downloaded Life Lapse on my iPhone to try it out. The first video I ever shot was a circle of colored Sharpies spinning around!
Soon after I downloaded Life Lapse, COVID-19 hit. I was out of a job and had more time on my hands than I knew what to do with. At this time I figured I might as well try to turn this little hobby into a career and started reaching out to brands.
I gave myself 4 months to start making money and to my surprise, I got my first paid job almost exactly at the 4-month mark.
Stop motion is such a learning process. With each shoot, I get better, gain more confidence, and dig deeper into my creative mind to explore new and exciting ideas. I have had a chance to work with some brands that I have loved for years. It is so fun to visualize a shoot that reflects each brand’s aesthetic and watch it come to life!
What results have you seen with stop motion compared to any other type of content you create?
Stop motion is such an exciting art form. I have always been interested in photography but never really could find my niche on what I actually wanted to photograph.
During my previous positions in hospitality, I was running social media accounts. I would stage photoshoots but nothing ever had the “wow!” effect. Stop motion content is such a show stopper (or shall I say finger stopper).
It is so important for brands to capture their audience’s attention in 1-3 seconds on social media or their advertisement is lost. Stop motion stops people in their tracks with short-form content.
Stop motion has been proven to reach a larger audience and create more engagement on social media. It is compelling to every audience even if they don’t exactly realize what they are watching!
Why did you download Life Lapse?
Initially, I downloaded Life Lapse after seeing other stop motion artists posting about it. Right off the bat, it was so user friendly, especially being a beginner. It was so easy to create such cool videos! I was hooked.
I still use Life Lapse all the time, whether for a test shoot for a larger shoot or if I am out and about and want to take a cool quick shoot! It is so easy and the videos look so professional! This is an example of when I was out this past summer with my coconut water and couldn’t help but want to take a cool stop motion.
What is your best stop motion tip?
Use a good tripod, make sure you have consistent lighting, and don’t give up! In the beginning, I would get so frustrated because I would spend hours shooting with this wonderful idea in my head. I would then string the images together for the stop motion and realize the lighting switched halfway through or I forgot a crucial image for the video. It can be frustrating but you learn from your mistakes and are so much better because of it!
What is your favorite platform to be on and why?
My favorite platform is Instagram! I will admit, I have been known to get sucked into TikTok for a few hours at a time but I have yet to become active on it myself! Between Instagram posts, stories, and reels, you really cannot go wrong!
Where can people follow you?
