Fall Fashion Flay Lay Video shot on iPhone | Fall 2020 Content Ideas for Instagram
Take a look at the two pieces of content below. Which one do you find more engaging?
The video, right? With only 1.7 seconds to capture someone’s attention on social media, you need content that will stop👏the👏scroll. We showed you some Instagram fall content inspo and how we were able to create 15 pieces of content in 4 hours, all from our phone. Now, we’re diving into each tutorial and giving you step-by-step instructions on recreating each video starting with this fall fashion flat lay video.
What is a flat lay? A flat lay is a photo of objects laid down flat on a surface and captured from above and is a common photo idea for showcasing products. With our stop motion app, Life Lapse, you can turn your flat lay clothing photography into an eye-catching video using stop motion video technique. We have a step by step guide on taking a flat lay photo and turning it into a stop motion here.
What you’ll need:
Fall clothing
An overhead tripod or a table - you can see how we use a table as a tripod hack here
Your phone and our free stop motion app, Life Lapse (available on Android or iOS)
A backdrop for your flat lay. We used a white foam core
Bluetooth remote (optional)
Step 1: If you are new to stop motion, we recommend taking this free stop motion 101 course to learn the basics of stop motion. The trick to stop motion is having consistent lighting and a stable phone so close your blinds, use a light or a lamp and set up your tripod.
Step 2: Lay down your clothes. In this example, we are starting with the full outfit and will be making the clothes roll up and away. If your setup is not wide enough and shows parts of the flat lay that you don’t want to see in your final video, don’t worry about it because we’ll edit this out later in the app.
Step 3: Lock your exposure and white balance. Take a photo, then roll the sweater slightly, take another photo, move the sweater again, take another photo, etc. We’re using our bluetooth remote (only available on Life Lapse Pro) but you can also use our built-in interval timer too. The key is to avoid touching your phone as much as possible while capturing your photos for a smooth stop motion.
Step 4: Continue to capture a photo after each movement of your clothing items. In our example, we started with the rolling of the sweater and then moved the boots out of the frame and ending with the pants rolling out.
Step 5: Press play and start editing. Editing is where the magic happens ✨ and if you need a stop motion editing intro, you can find our stop motion editing 101 here. Here are the exact editing steps we took to create our fashion flat lay video but feel free to edit however you like:
Rotate it - when you are taking a flat photo, the camera thinks it’s a horizontal project so we need to rotate it
Increase the speed
Reverse it - we do this because it’s much easier to work backwards from the end result when shooting instead of trying to figure out how to roll it in while you’re shooting. This gives us the illusion of the clothes coming in.
Use Tilt to crop and reposition the crop
Increase the brightness to make the video pop
Freeze effect on the last effect
Boomerang
Step 6: That’s it! Now you can save, share and watch your engagement on social media increase with stop motion. Be sure to tag us and use hashtag #lifelapse for a chance to have your creations featured.
