Claire used a DSLR to capture the images that make up this stop motion which you can too. Life Lapse has an import photos feature if you prefer to use your camera and use Life Lapse for editing. However, in the instructions below, we’ll walk you through how to create it on your phone with Life Lapse.

What you’ll need:

  • Life Lapse, our free stop motion app

  • Ornaments

  • Putty or tape (optional)

  • A prop for your transition method. Claire uses a wooden hammer but you could also use a a wand or your finger to indicate that you are turning the ornament into something else

  • Smaller object that your ornament will turn into. In this example, Claire used peppermints

Step 1: Download our stop motion app, Life Lapse. Open up Life Lapse and press the “+” to create a new project

Step 2: Set your scene. Putty or clear tape at the bottom of your object will allow you to keep your object in place which can be especially tricky when your object is round like an ornament!

Step 3: Capture your first image of the scene. In the animation, the hammer enters the scene so slowly move in your hammer, capture another photo. Move the hammer in some more, capture another photo and so forth until your hammer hits your ornament.

Step 4: Once your hammer makes contact with your ornament, remove the ornament and replace it with your smaller objects and in this example, it is replaced with peppermints.

Step 5: Bring your hammer back into the scene and match the spot where the hammer left off of.

💡Tip: Use Life Lapse’s ghost feature to line up your shot again for the smoothest transition.

Step 6: Choose how you’d like to complete your scene. Claire choses to have her hammer move out of the frame so capture a photo with each movement of your hammer moving away and out of the scene.

Step 7: Click the play button to see your holiday stop motion! Increase the speed and add a holiday soundtrack 🎄

This transition can be replicated throughout many different kinds of concepts. If you recreate this tutorial, tag @lifelapse_app and @claire.oring so we can see!
