How to Make an Unboxing Video on your Phone

The Life Lapse team are big fans of small brands and digital creators. There is nothing sweeter to see than the camaraderie and talent within this community. So much so that they have not only provided me the opportunity to showcase my skill set using their app, Life Lapse, but also welcomed me into the fold as a new member of the team.

Who am I? Hi everyone, I’m Kristy, a digital content creator specializing in stop motion and photography. There is something so magical about the art of stop motion. I’m lucky enough to be based in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. You can find me on social @bakingbykristy or over on my website.

A quick little background on me. I only discovered stop motion late last year while undergoing a career change. I chose to step away from over a decade in the Payroll field. Through experimenting, exploring and following the breadcrumbs, all as part of keeping an open mind, I found myself pursuing creativity.

I shoot all of my stop motion videos exclusively on the Life Lapse app, which I discovered late last year. I have both Skillshare and Colette Peri to thank for this discovery via a short stop motion course. I’ve now created hundreds of videos using the Life Lapse app. It is a fantastic way to explore my creativity and create video content.

Today I’m going to show you how to create an unboxing stop motion video using the Life Lapse app.

What you’ll need:

  • iPhone or Android with Life Lapse

  • A hero subject i.e. subscription box or box full of products

  • Your preferred background

  • Any additional props

  • Remote trigger (alternatively you can use the interval timer in app)

  • A continuous light source (check out this post for lighting suggestions)

Step 1: Set up your shot, with the subject and props placed how you would like. I recommend using both the grid overlay and ghost feature in Life Lapse. This will speed the alignment process along during the shoot.

Step 2: Check your phone settings to make sure audio is turned on so you hear each shot. Also, make sure your Auto-Lock is set to ‘Never’ otherwise your phone will lock during the shoot and you will have to start over.

Step 3: Within the Life Lapse app, make sure you lock the white balance, exposure and focus so that none of these areas change during the capturing process, which would then impact the end result.

Step 4: Take your first photo, make changes to your scene and check for any necessary realignment before taking your next photo. Repeat this process until you have captured all the photos required. In the example, the daisies were removed bit by bit before lowering the box by taking away a dvd at a time. This was all in preparation for the actual unboxing and displaying of the products.

Step 5: Launch the editor and make any adjustments you would like! You can speed up the video, freeze the ending and make tweaks to the overall look, to name a few edits you can do. There are so many options within the Life Lapse app. It is a one stop app!

Step 6: Save and share! Don’t forget to tag Life Lapse on Instagram using the hashtag #LifeLapse or @LifeLapse_app! Can’t wait to see what everyone creates.

There are many different ways and styles to create an unboxing video, but they all follow the same process for making them. Unboxing videos are great for subscription box or product-based companies to showcase their offerings.
